The title of Lady of the Holy Order was an extension of the codes of chivalry. This title was often given to a woman of churchly virtue, or one who through great acts within the Church attained privileged status. Though a ladyship in the Holy Order usually came from the husband's invocation in the Order, some achieved the high status before the husband. An untitled woman also usually purchased these titles after the passing of the husband.
The prestige of having the Holy Order of Knighthood or Ladyship, along with the certificate of proof, is presented for life.
